Indawgyi Lake Designated As Biosphere Reserve

Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State, renown as the largest freshwater lake in Myanmar, has been designated as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, acccording to news reports.

The Biosphere Reserve of Indawgyi Lake, which is 133715 hecteres, includes the lake and the surrounding wetlands and forest for a distance of about 15 kilometres.

The Reserve is also home to more than 160 bird species—some of which are globally threatened water birds—as well as turtle species, endemic fish, mammals, reptiles and primates.
